Access Control Systems: Different Types, What Do They Do & How Do They Work?

Access Control Systems in Indore and India

Access Control Systems in Indore

Firstly, Access Control Systems are the electronic systems that are connected to a network and authorize the person to enter the premises only when a person passes through the security check, physically or digitally. This ensures the safety and security of the premises where these systems are installed.

You must have seen a few of them like automatic doors and flap barriers in malls, tripod turnstiles in commercial buildings or metros, RFID tags on clothes during shopping, cows with RFID tags on their ears, etc.

We will talk about Access Control Systems in detail now.

Types of Access Control Systems

  • Discretionary Access Control (DAC)

These Access Control Systems give complete access authority to the owner of the business and he/she can choose who all are allowed to enter the premises or get access to a file or a program digitally. The end-users have complete authority to decide upon their security settings, which could lead to malware entering the system without their knowledge.

  • Managed Access Control (MAC)

Managed Access Control is mainly used by organizations that require confidentiality and data classification. The owner has control over the management of access controls with several security checks and established guidelines for the end-users.

  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

Role-based Access Control Systems are highly prevalent nowadays and are used by both households and businesses alike. In this access control system, there are specific control functions assigned to the job titles by the administrator. This allows a systematic breakdown of the access controls enabling high security.

Access Control Systems: What are they and what do they do?

They authorize access to buildings, offices, or a particular system software that requires permission for access. Access Control Systems comprise of various parts such as:-

Access Control Server

The server is the main part of the access control system. All the permissions of access control systems are stored in the access database. Access to the permissions is granted or rejected by the server based on the information fed on it. They monitor, record, and track every activity and provide reports to the admin when they need it. A whitelist is made for storing all the credentials.

Access Control Credentials

Access Control Credentials are virtually used to store data. They can be in the form of a PIN code, a fingerprint, a credit/debit card magnetic strip, or a smartphone. One should also keep 2 credentials for more security so that the access will only be granted when it matches the data stored in the whitelist with both of them.

Door Locks

The door locks are attached to the access control panel. You can choose door locks depending on what kind of door you want and your security needs. Do remember that they will only unlock once the credentials have been verified.

Access Control Reader

The Access Control Reader a person uses depends on the credentials such as PIN, RFID or fingerprint scanners , etc. As a result The data is scanned and then converted by the access control reader to Wiegand numbers (universal protocol read by the access control panel).

Access Control Panel (Controllers)

Access Control Panel or the controllers are the central hubs to which everything is connected. The controllers verify the Wiegand numbers with the whitelist. If the credentials match, the door unlocks. The control panel can communicate with any access control reader since the door locks can read the Wiegand numbers.

How does Access Control Systems work?

Firstly: You feed in your credentials in the access control reader.

Secondly: The reader sends the data to the control panel.

Thirdly: The control panel checks if the data matches the server’s whitelist (database).

Fourthly: If the credentials match, the control panel sends a signal to open the door. If it does not match, the door remains locked.
